Goals and objectives of the track

Contemporary urban and regional planning and architecture increasingly face the challenge of minimizing social, cultural and environmental impacts while pursuing long lasting interactions between inhabitants and their environments. Inspired by models of Nature and based on inclusive design of spaces and buildings, within a balance of technology and the use of local resources, this track looks for sensible approaches to sustainable, green cities and regions.

Besides the discussion of key concepts, methods and applications, the goal of this track is to collect lessons learned from research and projects on green planning, architecture and design. This will allow pointing out opportunities, constraints and priorities and revisiting global and local adaptive solutions to advance sustainability innovation in urban and regional design, planning and architecture.

Contributions from the followings areas are sought-after:

  • ‘Cradle to cradle’ thinking in architecture.
  • Innovation inspired by nature-ways of seeking sustainable solutions (for example biomimicry);
  • Green urban and rural design and planning;
  • The role of stakeholders sustainable city and region development;
  • The dimensions of green design and architecture - fostering sustainable lessons in vernacular building traditions and enhancing communities & heritage-based projects;
  • Risk, resilience and sustainability of post-disaster and slum upgrading projects
  • Greening of cities and regions in an international and cross-country context.
