Goals and objectives of the track

During the last decades several worldwide initiatives have emphasised that education is urgent for societies to become more sustainable. The recent proposal for sustainable development goals and targets of the United Nation (UN), launched in 2015, following the Rio+20 UN conference, stresses that by 2030 all learners should acquire knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including through education for sustainable development (ESD). The aim of this track is to provide an opportunity to discuss the contributions, and their extent, of academia to the societal transformation towards sustainability. The track is also aimed at discussing the areas that still need to be challenged, including models, approaches, and practices.

We invite all educational institutions and stakeholders committed to Education for Sustainable Development to this track in order to share your experiences, and present your research activities in this topic.

Contributions from the following areas include, but are not limited, to the following themes:

  • New approaches in sustainability science education;
  • Rethinking education for sustainable development theories, practices and approaches for different socio-cultural and economic contexts;
  • New competencies and pedagogical models for education for sustainable development;
  • Stakeholder engagement and participation for education for sustainable development;
  • ‘Sustainable educational institutions” concepts or related initiatives;
  • Drivers to ESD implementation, barriers in adopting ESD, and strategies to overcome resistance to sustainability implementation;
  • Knowledge transfer and collaboration strategies between academia and practitioners;
  • Holistic integration of sustainable development into education, research, campus operations, outreach, assessment, reporting, on-campus life experiences, and educating-the-educators;
  • Integration of education for sustainable development in all educational chain from kindergarten to university and there after, in life long learning and labour market;
  • Sustainability assessment tools and benchmarking of education and research.
